With Editor and Literary Consultant Claire Wingfield

The Pleasance Edinburgh (Cabaret Bar), Saturday January 26th 2019, 12pm-4pm

Learn how to create an appealing pitch for your manuscript and how to run an efficient and effective submissions period for your work.

This half-day workshop gives you the chance to learn about the workings of the publishing industry and ask experienced literary consultant Claire Wingfield all the questions you’ve ever wanted to about the traditional path to publication. We’ll be talking agents and publishers – how to select who to submit to, how to submit to them in the best possible way, and crucially what to do if you gain agent or publisher interest.

Participants will also get the chance to pitch their manuscript, and will gain vital feedback on their pitch material (including submissions cover letter and synopsis).

Writers can choose to submit a cover letter and synopsis prior to the workshop.

"I took part in one of your workshops on how to pitch your novel. It was incredibly helpful for me and although the book I was working on then was never picked up, the one I went on to write next was - by Clare Alexander of Aitken Alexander Associates, with what she described as a very good pitch letter, for which, thank you!"

Mary Paulson-Ellis, The Other Mrs Walker (Waterstones Scottish Book of the Year 2017)

Claire’s workshop on pitching to agents and publishers involved submitting a draft synopsis and introductory letter in advance so she could prepare for the workshop and provide immediate feedback by the time of attendance. At the event she clarified exactly what to should be included in a straightforward, professional way. I found the exercise we did on the day incredibly helpful and the whole experience left me feeling encouraged that this was something I could do.

Before the workshop I had a synopsis of sorts and a very rough covering letter but no real enthusiasm for either. Claire helped me to stand back from my book and distil the essence of the story. Everything fell into place. After the workshop, Claire again checked the much improved and revised synopsis and covering letter and confirmed I felt ready to go forward with confidence. Confidence is exactly what I came away with from the whole workshop experience and I was very impressed with the level of support she gave me.

I thoroughly enjoyed my workshop with Claire and found it really beneficial. It was a small group and there was plenty of space to focus on our own work. This workshop really reignited my passion for my writing.

I want to thank you for putting together such a brilliant workshop. Can it be possible: I felt like a much savvier writer after those four hours.

I got so much out of it, both your genius insights and the inspirational contributions of the other writers.

Now I feel my pitch is finally right and is ready to go and face another round of agents while the skills you taught of analysing our book buying motivations and using those to shape our pitch will stay with me for the next book.
